Top 3 alternatives to Azure for public cloud in India
Top 3 alternatives to Azure for public cloud in India
Where Azure still makes sense, where AWS, IBM Cloud and Alibaba Cloud do the job better for Indian workloads, and the honest math before you commit.
When Azure still fits
Before you switch, check whether you are actually in the group that should stay put. We sell and service Azure, so this list is honest.
Stay with Azure if your company already lives in the Microsoft world. When identity is Active Directory, mail is Exchange Online and the desktops run M365, Azure is less a cloud choice and more an extension of decisions you already made. The integration savings are real and they compound. Every integration you would have to rebuild elsewhere is a cost the rate card never shows.
Stay if you hold Windows Server and SQL Server licences. Azure Hybrid Benefit lets those carry over, and on licence-heavy workloads that discount routinely beats any rival’s sticker price. Walking away from it means paying for the same software twice. Price that discount properly before any alternative quote turns your head.
Stay if Azure OpenAI is doing real work for you. Managed access to frontier models inside your own tenancy, with your compliance controls wrapped around it, is something the alternatives answer differently or not at all.
Stay if you sell to government or large enterprise. Azure’s compliance certifications and its three Indian regions make procurement conversations shorter. We have seen deals where the buyer’s security questionnaire was effectively pre-answered because the stack was already Azure end to end. Over a contract cycle that is worth months of procurement time.
And stay if your last two bills were the only problem. Azure cost surprises usually trace to unreserved virtual machines, oversized SQL tiers and dev environments nobody switched off. A governance pass with reservations applied often ends the exit conversation entirely. Do that math before you price a migration.
Azure at a glance
The brand you are benchmarking everything else against.
Azure
- What it is
- Microsoft’s public cloud. Compute, data, AI and the managed home of Azure OpenAI, wired into the rest of the Microsoft stack.
- India presence
- Three regions: Central India in Pune, South India in Chennai, West India in Mumbai. Residency is well covered.
- Price model
- USD billing through pay as you go, CSP or an Enterprise Agreement. Hybrid Benefit discounts Windows and SQL workloads.
- Where it wins
- Integration. Active Directory, M365, Dynamics and Windows licensing all pull toward it, and hybrid tooling is mature.
- Where it hurts
- Pricing is genuinely hard to forecast, and the licensing rules take a specialist to read.
- Support
- Mostly through Microsoft partners and CSP providers in India, with paid direct plans above that.
The 3 alternatives, honestly compared
Every brand below is one Sirius Star supplies and services in India. We make money either way, which is exactly why we can be straight with you.
AWS
The deepest catalogue in the business
- More than 200 managed services, from databases to GenAI tooling.
- Mumbai and Hyderabad regions with a long operational track record.
- The largest pool of trained cloud engineers in India.
The honest downside: Complexity cuts both ways, and costs sprawl without active governance.

Hybrid cloud built around Red Hat OpenShift
- OpenShift keeps the same containers running on-prem and in cloud.
- Compliance and security tooling designed for regulated industries.
- Natural fit where Power systems or mainframes stay in the picture.
The honest downside: Thinner ecosystem and talent pool in India than AWS or Azure.

APAC scale at aggressive prices
- Consistently undercuts the big three on comparable compute.
- Wide IaaS, data and CDN coverage across Asian regions.
- Strong Singapore presence for Southeast Asia facing applications.
The honest downside: No Indian region since its Mumbai exit, so DPDP-sensitive data needs careful placement.

| Factor | Azure | AWS | IBM Cloud | Alibaba Cloud |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| India regions | Pune, Chennai, Mumbai | Mumbai + Hyderabad | Hybrid-led, verify per service | None, serves India from Singapore |
| Billing | USD, via EA, CSP or pay as you go | USD, pay as you go | USD, contract-led | USD, aggressive discounting |
| Ecosystem | Microsoft stack plus Azure OpenAI | Largest, 200+ services | Red Hat OpenShift and hybrid tooling | APAC-centric, thinner in India |
| DPDP data residency | Yes, in-country regions | Yes, in-country regions | Depends on workload placement | Offshore by default |
| India support | Microsoft partner and CSP network | Paid tiers from 100 dollars a month | Contract-led enterprise support | Partner-led, limited local depth |
| Best fit | Microsoft-first businesses | Service-heavy product stacks | Regulated hybrid estates | Cost-led APAC workloads |
When switching from Azure pays off, and when it does not
Switching pays off when your engineers are fighting the platform. Teams that build on Linux, containers and open-source data stacks often move faster on AWS, where the tooling assumes exactly that profile and every hiring round finds people who know it.
It pays off when portability is a board-level requirement. Regulated businesses that must prove they can exit a provider find IBM Cloud’s OpenShift approach persuasive, because the same containers demonstrably run on-prem. That is an audit answer, not a slide.
It pays off for price-led APAC workloads with no India residency need. Alibaba Cloud’s compute pricing is aggressive, and for a Singapore-facing product the savings are real. Check where every byte of personal data of Indian users ends up before you sign, because DPDP obligations travel with the data.
It does not pay off if your Enterprise Agreement still has years to run, if Hybrid Benefit is carrying your licence costs, or if the real complaint is two surprise bills. Egress, retraining and rewritten pipelines are genuine costs. Sometimes our written quote says stay on Azure and fix the reservations, because that is the honest answer.
