The verdict in one line

ESET wins on system footprint and India channel pricing for a lean IT team managing older hardware. Microsoft Defender wins on cost and console consolidation for a Microsoft 365-first business. Branch offices running ageing hardware, or an MSP managing many small clients, ESET’s lightweight agent and single console earn their keep. Microsoft 365-first SMB with modern hardware, check what Defender you already own before adding a second agent.

ESET vs Microsoft Defender at a glance

Both brands in one view. Where each one wins, and where the ASP network changes the answer.

ESET

Who makes it
ESET, spol. s r.o., founded 1992 in Bratislava, Slovakia. Privately held, debt-free and not for sale, with no external investors pushing an exit.
What it covers
ESET PROTECT platform (Entry, Advanced, Complete, Elite tiers), ESET Inspect for EDR/XDR, and LiveGuard cloud sandboxing, all from one console.
India price band
Under Rs 1 lakh a year for most mid-size deployments, backed by a deep India partner and channel pricing network.*
Best fit
IT teams managing older hardware or branch offices where a heavy agent slows every machine down, and MSPs running many small client estates.
Honest limit
EDR and XDR breadth trails CrowdStrike and SentinelOne on deep network traffic analysis, and the PROTECT console has a real learning curve at first login.

Microsoft Defender

Who makes it
Microsoft Corporation. A native part of the Microsoft Defender security family, not a bolt-on acquisition.
What it covers
Next-gen antivirus, attack surface reduction, EDR and automated investigation, bought standalone or bundled inside Microsoft 365 Business Premium.
India price band
Rs 250 per user/month standalone, or included at no extra cost inside Microsoft 365 Business Premium at Rs 2,660/user/month.*
Best fit
Businesses already on Microsoft 365 who want device security in the same portal as email and identity, and do not want a second console to log into.
Honest limit
Capped at 300 users and 5 devices per user on the Business plan. Heavier on system resources than ESET’s agent, and the standalone console leaves out Plan 2’s advanced hunting.

Which one for what

The clean decision guide for common Indian B2B scenarios. Pick the row that fits.

Branch office running older hardware

ESET. Its agent is among the lightest tested, and older machines feel the difference.

Already paying for Microsoft 365 Business Premium

Check if Defender for Business is already switched on before adding a second agent and a second invoice.

MSP managing many small client estates

ESET. One lightweight console across every client, and channel pricing built for exactly this.

Mixed Windows, Mac and Linux estate

ESET PROTECT covers all three from one console; Defender leans hardest on Windows.

Small, fully Microsoft 365 shop with modern hardware

Microsoft Defender. The protection you already pay for likely covers the ground.

“Our field staff run five-year-old laptops that can barely handle a video call, let alone a heavy security suite. We needed something that would not become the reason a machine froze mid-shift.”

ESET vs Microsoft Defender in India FAQ

Common questions Indian buyers ask. Answers grounded in current sources.

Is ESET good enough to replace Microsoft Defender, or the other way round?
For a Microsoft 365-first SMB on modern hardware with no servers, Defender for Business often covers the ground and may already be included in your licence. For a mixed-platform estate, older hardware, or an MSP managing many clients, ESET’s lighter agent and single console earn their place.
Can I run ESET and Microsoft Defender on the same laptop?
We do not recommend it. Two full real-time antivirus engines on one device cause scan conflicts and slow the machine for no security benefit. Pick one as the primary agent and disable the other’s real-time protection even if the licence stays active.
Which is cheaper for a 150-seat Indian business?
ESET typically lands under Rs 1 lakh a year for a deployment this size, similar to or below Microsoft Defender’s standalone Rs 250 per user/month. If you already pay for Microsoft 365 Business Premium, Defender is effectively free since it is bundled in.
Why does ESET’s agent feel lighter than Defender’s?
Independent AV-TEST performance runs consistently rank ESET among the lightest endpoint agents on system resources. This matters most on older laptops or branch-office desktops that were not budgeted for a refresh this year.
What happens if we outgrow Microsoft Defender for Business’s 300-user cap?
You move to Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Plan 1 or Plan 2, a separate licence and console, through the Microsoft CSP channel. ESET’s PROTECT tiers scale from ten seats to thousands without that kind of licence jump.
