It is whether the patch on the OT segment can land without taking the packing line down with it.

When switching from Fortinet pays off, and when it does not

If you already run Fortinet and someone is pitching a rip and replace, here is the honest test. Switching off Fortinet pays off in exactly one case. Your estate has outgrown what your current FortiGate models can inspect, and the newer fabric would genuinely cut your risk on the OT side. A fresh audit finding that your firewall cannot segment a regulated machine network is a real reason to move. A cheaper renewal number, on its own, usually is not.

I have made the opposite mistake, so I will name it. On my first pass at that Pune plant I spec’d a bigger head-office FortiGate than the traffic asked for. Good box. Also more than the line count and the break-out needed. The plant’s finance head questioned the item, I re-checked the numbers, and she was right. We dropped to the smaller model and put the saving into an OT-aware unit on the floor, where the real gap was. The lesson holds. Size the box to the segment that actually carries risk, not the one on the datasheet.

It does not pay to switch when the complaint is the renewal invoice alone. Moving a live plant network to a new firewall vendor means parallel running, re-tested rules, and a fresh set of things that can break on a shift you did not choose.
