Veritas NetBackup, now part of Cohesity. For Indian enterprise buyers.
Cohesity bought Veritas. Your backup contract did not change.
The Short Version
Veritas NetBackup in India, still fully supported, quoted in 24 working hours.
Last updated: 21 July 2026
A Navi Mumbai NBFC’s IT head called us in January worried that Cohesity’s acquisition of Veritas meant a forced platform migration was coming. We walked him through what actually changed (ownership, not the product roadmap) and what did not (his licence, his support tier, his renewal date). He renewed for three years. Story below.

Veritas NetBackup at a glance
Veritas NetBackup is the enterprise backup platform that started life as Veritas Software in 1983, spent thirteen years inside Symantec, went private under Carlyle Group in 2016, and became part of Cohesity on 10 December 2024 in a roughly $3 billion cash-and-stock combination. The NetBackup product line did not stop. Cohesity has said publicly it is continuing to invest in NetBackup, its appliances, and Veritas Alta, and the combined company now protects hundreds of exabytes of data across more than 12,000 customers. It fits large Indian enterprises with petabyte-scale, heterogeneous estates, tape still in the mix, and a regulator asking for immutable, long-retention backups. It does not fit a 50-server mid-market shop on a tight budget. NetBackup’s capacity-based Front-End-TB licensing gets expensive fast at that scale, and Veeam or Commvault usually land a cleaner quote. We will say so on the first call.
- OEM and founding
- Veritas Software, founded 1983. Merged into Symantec in 2005 (~$13.5B), carved out to Carlyle Group in 2016 (~$7.4B), and combined with Cohesity on 10 December 2024.
- What it is
- Enterprise backup and recovery software, appliances and cloud protection: NetBackup, NetBackup Flex Scale, and Veritas Alta.
- Ownership in 2026
- Part of Cohesity. Backup Exec, InfoScale, and the Data Compliance portfolio were split off separately in December 2024 as Arctera, a different company under Carlyle. NetBackup and Alta stayed with Cohesity.
- India track record
- Long-standing enterprise presence across BFSI, PSU, healthcare and telecom, distributed through authorised Indian channel partners with GST-billed invoicing.
- Scale proof
- The combined Cohesity-Veritas base covers 12,000+ customers including 85+ of the Fortune 100 and close to 70% of the Global 500. NetBackup has been named a Leader in the last 20 straight Gartner backup and data protection reports, a streak no rival platform matches.
- Sirius Star’s role
- We are an authorised reseller. We size the estate, license it correctly, deploy it, and put it on a support runbook. We do not manufacture or rebadge anything Veritas or Cohesity sells.
- Best fit
- Large enterprises with petabyte-scale, mixed-workload estates, tape still in scope, and a regulator asking for immutable, long-retention backup copies.
The 4 ranges Sirius Star supplies
We do not carry every product Veritas has ever shipped. These four cover the estates Indian enterprise buyers actually run in 2026.
NetBackup series
The licensed backup engine, now shipping as Cohesity NetBackup 10.x and 11.x, for heterogeneous estates spanning physical, virtual and cloud workloads.
NetBackup 10.x*, NetBackup 11.x*
- About 500 connectors to source systems, the broadest workload coverage of any backup platform we sell
- Runs on your own qualified media-server hardware, best when you already have infrastructure to amortise
- Honest limitation: Front-End-TB licensing is capacity-based and gets expensive at scale. Budget for the renewal true-up, not just the first PO
NetBackup Flex and Flex Scale series
Veritas-built appliances that bundle the backup engine, storage and dedupe into one SKU, scaling from a single appliance to a container-native, scale-out fabric.
NetBackup Flex*, NetBackup Flex Scale*
- Single support contact for hardware and software, no separate media-server sizing exercise
- Flex Scale adds nodes for capacity or performance independently, with an S3-compatible storage tier built in
- Honest limitation: appliance lead times run 4-8 weeks from factory. Order ahead of a compliance deadline, not against one
Veritas Alta Data Protection
Cloud-delivered backup for SaaS workloads and cloud-native infrastructure, sitting alongside NetBackup for one recovery story across on-premises and cloud.
Veritas Alta Data Protection*
- Covers M365, Google Workspace and cloud-native workloads under one console with NetBackup
- Subscription billing, no hardware to size or rack
- Honest limitation: it is a companion to NetBackup, not a replacement. Estates with heavy on-premises tape still need the core platform
NetBackup IT Analytics
The reporting layer on top of NetBackup: capacity trending, chargeback data and audit-ready compliance reports for the CISO and the finance team.
NetBackup IT Analytics*
- Turns raw backup logs into board-ready capacity and compliance reporting
- Useful for chargeback models across business units sharing one backup estate
- Honest limitation: it is an add-on, not a standalone product. Only worth licensing once NetBackup itself is deployed and stable

Veritas NetBackup vs Veeam vs Commvault vs Rubrik
NetBackup is not the only serious enterprise backup platform in India, and we will not pretend otherwise. Its own buyers flag two recurring complaints: Front-End-TB licensing that gets expensive at scale, and a management interface that still shows its age next to newer platforms. We do not hide either. Here is where each real rival actually wins.
| Platform | Where it wins | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Veritas NetBackup | Broadest workload coverage (~500 connectors), a 20-report Gartner Leader streak, and the deepest tape integration in the category | Large, heterogeneous, petabyte-scale estates with tape and a regulator asking for immutable retention |
| Veeam | Simpler, more modern console and faster time to first backup on virtual-first estates | VMware and Hyper-V-heavy mid-market shops that do not need tape |
| Commvault | Strong cloud-native data protection and a single-pane console operators pick up faster than NetBackup’s | Mixed enterprise estates weighting ease of operation over raw connector count |
| Rubrik | API-first, SaaS-managed architecture with fast, granular recovery for cloud-native and Kubernetes workloads | Cloud-first estates that want zero on-premises management overhead |
How a Sirius Star NetBackup procurement runs
1. Estate and retention review
Protected data volume, workload mix, RPO and RTO targets by system, and any regulator-mandated retention. Forty-five minutes on a call for most estates.
2. Licence and appliance sizing
Front-End-TB count, appliance model if you are going Flex or Flex Scale, and whether Alta Data Protection covers your SaaS and cloud footprint.
3. Written quote and PO
GST-billed pricing, support tier, and delivery schedule in one document, inside 24 working hours.
4. Deploy, baseline, handover
Install, configure backup policies, run baseline backups, and hand your team a tested recovery runbook, not a slide deck.

Send me the Field GuideVeritas NetBackup India FAQ
Is Veritas NetBackup still supported now that Cohesity owns it?
Yes. The Cohesity-Veritas combination closed on 10 December 2024, and Cohesity has stated publicly it is continuing to invest in NetBackup, NetBackup appliances and Veritas Alta. Your existing licence, support tier and renewal terms carry over. Nothing about the product roadmap changed on day one of the deal.
What happened to Backup Exec and InfoScale? Were they part of the Cohesity deal?
No. Backup Exec, InfoScale and the Data Compliance portfolio (including Enterprise Vault) were spun off separately in December 2024 into a different company called Arctera, still under Carlyle Group. If you run one of those products, your vendor relationship is now with Arctera, not Cohesity.
Why is NetBackup licensing so expensive?
NetBackup prices on Front-End-TB, a capacity-based model that scales with the data you protect, not the hardware you run it on. It gets genuinely expensive on renewals and true-ups at large scale. If your estate is under roughly 100TB and mostly virtual, we will usually quote Veeam or Commvault alongside NetBackup so you can compare the real numbers before you commit.
Is the NetBackup interface really as dated as people say?
The core NetBackup Web UI is Java-based and has a real learning curve compared to newer, browser-native consoles like Veeam’s or Rubrik’s. It is a fair criticism. What it buys you is the deepest connector library and tape integration in the category. If your team already knows it, retraining cost is low. If you are starting fresh and do not need tape, weigh that learning curve honestly against a simpler platform.
NetBackup vs Veeam vs Commvault vs Rubrik: which should I buy?
NetBackup for large, heterogeneous, petabyte-scale estates with tape and regulator-mandated retention. Veeam for virtual-first mid-market shops without tape. Commvault for mixed enterprise estates that weigh ease of operation over raw connector count. Rubrik for cloud-first estates wanting a SaaS-managed platform with no on-premises overhead. We sell three of the four and will size against your actual estate, not push whichever one we have stock of.
What is Sirius Star’s role, are you a NetBackup distributor?
We are an authorised reseller, not a distributor or Cohesity subsidiary. We size your estate, license it correctly under the current Front-End-TB model, handle deployment, and sit as your single support contact instead of you filing tickets directly with Cohesity’s global queue.
