Avaya for SMB Owner in India: IP Office, not the enterprise stack
Where Avaya IP Office R12 fits a small team’s phones, and where the enterprise contact centre is built for someone with thousands of agents, not you. In plain terms.
When Avaya still fits
Before you switch, check whether you are actually in the group that should stay put. We sell and service Avaya, so this list is honest.
The quote landed on a Tuesday. Nine pages, for a 22-person firm that asked for desk phones. Somewhere on page four was a contact-centre platform with a 200-seat minimum, which is a number no 22-person business will ever reach. The salesperson was not wrong that Avaya is a serious name in telephony. Somebody was about to be wrong about which Avaya. The enterprise stack, the Experience Platform, the Infinity codebase, all of it is built for organisations running thousands of agents. A small office needs one product from that catalogue, and it is not the one on page four.
That product is IP Office R12. Give the opposition its due here: IP Office is a genuinely good small and mid business phone system, it has run offices for years, it scales from a handful of extensions upward, and it carries the carrier-grade reliability Avaya is known for on the big deployments. It does voice, voicemail, basic call handling and hunt groups, the things a small team actually uses, without the contact-centre machinery bolted on. For an owner who wants phones that work and a name that will still be answering the support line in five years, IP Office is a fair, sober choice.
Now the part an owner has to hear straight. Avaya has been through two Chapter 11 bankruptcies, in 2017 and again in 2023, and it has retired products its customers relied on, Avaya Spaces was killed in 2025. Avaya Cloud Office, the cloud phone option, is rebadged RingCentral rather than Avaya’s own platform. None of that breaks IP Office for a small team, but it does mean you are buying an on-premise commitment from a vendor that has restructured twice, not a cancel-anytime cloud seat. Read what you are signing. A phone system is a three-to-five-year decision, and the exit terms matter as much as the monthly.
So the honest verdict for an SMB owner. If you want a solid on-premise phone system and IP Office fits your extension count, Avaya is a reasonable buy and we will size it properly. If you want something you switch on this week, cancel next quarter and never patch, the enterprise contact centre is the wrong shelf and even IP Office may be more system than you need. Price Microsoft Teams Phone beside it, since you may already pay for the Microsoft 365 licence it rides on. We resell Avaya and Teams both, so read this knowing that.
Avaya at a glance
The brand you are benchmarking everything else against.
Avaya
- What fits an SMB
- One product: Avaya IP Office R12, an on-premise or hybrid phone system for small and mid teams. The rest of the Avaya catalogue is enterprise contact centre, not for you.
- What does not fit
- Avaya Experience Platform and Avaya Infinity, the contact-centre stack with a 200-seat minimum, built for banks, telcos and government, not a 20-person office.
- Why an owner buys it
- A reliable, carrier-grade phone system from a name that will still answer the support line, with voice, voicemail and call handling and none of the contact-centre overhead.
- Where it fits best
- Owners who want a solid on-premise phone estate for a fixed team size and a multi-year horizon, not a cancel-anytime cloud seat.
- The honest gaps
- Two Chapter 11 bankruptcies, retired products like Avaya Spaces, and a cloud option that is rebadged RingCentral rather than Avaya’s own.
- Sirius Star relationship
- Authorised Avaya reseller in India. We size IP Office honestly and quote Microsoft Teams Phone beside it when that is the better small-team call, from Vashi, Navi Mumbai.

Every brand below is one Sirius Star supplies and services in India. We make money either way, which is exactly why we can be straight with you.
Avaya IP Office R12
The Avaya product actually built for a small team.
- Voice, voicemail, call handling and hunt groups without contact-centre overhead
- Carrier-grade reliability from a serious telephony name
- Scales from a handful of extensions upward as the team grows
The honest downside: It is an on-premise commitment from a vendor that has restructured twice, so read the term and the exit before you sign.
View the Avaya IP Office R12 page →Avaya for CFO
The three-to-five-year cost, laid out for finance.
- OpEx against CapEx on an on-premise phone system
- What the multi-year commitment actually locks you into
- Where a cloud seat beats owning the hardware
The honest downside: It is written for a finance desk, so a very small owner may want the plain phone-count version instead.
View the Avaya for CFO page →Avaya for IT Manager
What keeping IP Office alive asks of your team.
- The deployment and on-call reality of an on-premise phone estate
- What patching and support look like without a dedicated IT team
- Where a managed or cloud option removes the burden
The honest downside: If nobody in the office owns IT, an on-premise system adds a job you may not want, which the cloud alternative avoids.
View the Avaya for IT Manager page →Microsoft 365 and Teams
The cloud phone many small teams pick instead.
- Teams Phone rides on a licence you may already hold
- No on-premise box to patch or a multi-year hardware commitment
- Switch on per seat and scale with the team month to month
The honest downside: It is a different tool, not a like-for-like PBX, so heavy call-handling needs should be checked before you drop the desk phones.

When switching from Avaya pays off, and when it does not
Buying Avaya IP Office makes sense when you want a real phone system for a stable team and a multi-year horizon. If your office runs on desk phones, if call reliability matters more than switching cloud plans every quarter, and if you have someone, in-house or a managed partner, who will own the box, then IP Office gives you carrier-grade voice from a serious name without the contact-centre machinery you will never use. Size it to your actual extension count, not the number on the enterprise quote.
It does not make sense when you want something light, cancel-friendly and hands-off. This is the honest fork for an owner. If you already pay for Microsoft 365, Teams Phone rides on that licence with no box to patch and no multi-year hardware lock, and for many small teams that is simply the better fit. And whichever way you go, read the term and the exit before you sign, because Avaya has restructured twice and a phone system is a three-to-five-year decision, not a monthly you forget about. The exit clause costs nothing to read now and a great deal to discover later.
The break-even is how you want to own your phones. If you want to own the system and keep it for years, IP Office is a sober, reliable choice and we will size it straight. If you want to rent seats and stay flexible, price Teams Phone beside it and let the licence you already hold do the arguing. We supply both, so we quote the stay-light case as seriously as the own-it one.
