IT Asset Disposition ITAD India
Old laptops sitting in the storeroom are not depreciating. They are leaking. Sirius Star runs the full ITAD chain. Data destruction, certified recycling, and buyback that puts money back on your books.

TL;DR
- ITAD covers pickup, secure data wipe, asset audit, certified e-waste, and buyback in one contract.
- Without it, every retired laptop is a DPDP exposure waiting to be found by an auditor.
- Sirius Star issues a wipe certificate per device and a CPCB recycling certificate per batch.
- Best fit: any firm with 50 plus retired devices, BFSI, healthcare, regulated workloads.
The stake
Rs 250 crore. That is the DPDP cap on a single data breach.
The Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 imposes penalties up to Rs 250 crore per breach. A storeroom full of un-wiped laptops is a category of risk the DPO is supposed to have closed. Most have not.
What ITAD actually does
An ITAD contract handles four things. Asset pickup from your locations. Data destruction with a certificate per device. Certified e-waste recycling under CPCB rules. And, where there is residual value, buyback that goes back to your books as miscellaneous income.
We treat ITAD as a chain of custody problem, not a logistics problem. Every device gets serial scanned at your dock. Wiped at our facility under camera. Recycled or refurbished. Certified at every step.
Why finance, legal, and IT all need to sign the ITAD policy
ITAD is one of those rare projects where three teams have to agree before it starts. Finance cares about the buyback recovery and the depreciation write-off. Legal cares about the DPDP exposure and the contractual indemnity. IT cares that the assets actually leave the building on the date promised.
The reason most ITAD programmes stall is none of these three has full authority. Sirius Star writes a one-page policy each can sign in a single meeting. Then we run it.

Data destruction methods we use
NIST SP 800-88 clear or purge for SSDs and HDDs. Crypto-erase for self-encrypting drives. Physical shredding for failed drives that will not respond to commands. Each method generates a certificate with serial number, method, operator, and timestamp.
For BFSI clients we run the entire wipe at your office under your CCTV. The drive never leaves your premises. The certificate is signed before pickup.
CPCB compliance and what your auditor will ask
E-waste in India is governed by the E-Waste Management Rules 2022. You need a Producer Responsibility Organisation registration or a contract with one. Sirius Star recycles through CPCB authorised dismantlers and provides the recycling certificate per batch.
Your auditor will ask for three things. The wipe certificate per device. The recycling certificate per batch. The chain of custody log. We hand all three over inside 14 days of pickup.
ITAD vs in-house disposal vs cheap scrap dealer
| Approach | Data risk | CPCB certificate | DPDP defensible | Residual value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Throw in the storeroom | Very high | No | No | Zero |
| Hand to scrap dealer | Very high | No | No | Pittance |
| In-house wipe and dump | Medium | No | Partial | Low |
| Sirius Star ITAD | Low | Yes | Yes | Up to 40 percent of original cost |

Sources we trust
The numbers and frameworks on this page come from primary sources you can verify.
- CPCB E-Waste Management Rules 2022 sets the certified recycling chain we run on.
- MeitY DPDP framework imposes the Rs 250 crore penalty cap on data leaks.
- NIST SP 800-88 media sanitization guidelines is the standard our wipe certificates conform to.

How the chain of custody actually works
Pickup is the first verification step. Our driver and your IT lead reconcile serial numbers on a tablet at your dock. Every laptop, server, switch, UPS is scanned. The CSV is signed digitally by both parties before the truck leaves.
Transport is to our nearest secure facility. Mumbai and Bengaluru for west and south clients. Delhi for north. Hyderabad for central. Devices are stored in a locked, CCTV-monitored room until wipe. No drives are removed before wipe. The chain is unbroken.
Wipe is per drive, under CCTV, by a named operator. The wipe tool produces a certificate per drive. We append it to a master report and email a copy inside seven working days.
Recycling or refurb is the last decision. Anything we can return to Grade A goes back into our refurbished inventory. Anything below grade goes to a CPCB authorised dismantler with a batch certificate. You receive both certificates as part of the final report. Nothing leaves the chain without paperwork.
Frequently asked questions
How is data wipe verified?
Every drive gets a wipe certificate with serial number, NIST 800-88 method used, operator name, timestamp, and a verification hash. We use Blancco or White Canyon WipeDrive depending on the drive type. The certificate stands up in audit.
What does buyback typically recover?
For 3-year-old business laptops we typically return 25 to 40 percent of original purchase cost as buyback credit. For 5-year-old kit it drops to 10 to 18 percent. We quote per batch after a serial-level audit.
Do you handle servers and networking gear?
Yes. Servers, switches, routers, UPS, KVMs, and storage arrays. The wipe and recycling chain is the same. Buyback is harder to predict because the secondary market is thinner.
How long does pickup to certificate take?
Pickup within 5 working days of PO. Wipe certificates in 7 working days from pickup. CPCB recycling certificate in 14 working days. Buyback credit note in 21 working days.
Is ITAD the same as scrap sale?
No. Scrap sale is a sub-step. ITAD adds data destruction, CPCB compliance, asset audit, and chain of custody. The scrap dealer gives you Rs 200 per laptop. ITAD gives you a defensible compliance posture and 25 percent of the original cost back.

P.S. A Pune-based fintech called us after a junior team member sold 18 retired MacBooks to a local scrap dealer for Rs 12,000 total. Two had un-wiped customer data. They spent Rs 14 lakh on legal counsel that month. We now run their ITAD pickups quarterly.
