The verdict in one line

Keep D-Link for access switching and CCTV PoE. Move to TP-Link Omada for cloud control at the same budget, to HPE Aruba past roughly 150 users, to Digisol for Make-in-India tenders, and to Alcatel-Lucent for campus backbones.

When D-Link still fits

Before you switch, check whether you are actually in the group that should stay put. We sell and service D-Link, so this list is honest.

D-Link earned its place in Indian server rooms the boring way. Stock in every city, a switch for every budget, and a warranty network of 220+ collection centres across 130+ locations. No other brand on this page can promise a swap-out that close to your office. If your network is a router, a few switches and a CCTV wall, that combination is hard to beat.

Stay put if you run a flat network with two or three VLANs and under 100 users. The DGS series smart switches handle VLAN tagging, QoS and PoE for cameras without drama. A 16-port PoE workhorse like the DGS-F1018P-E sells for under Rs 12,000 with 6kV surge protection built in. Nothing else in this article beats that on price per port, and your accountant will notice if you try.

Stay put if CCTV is the main job. D-Link PoE switches with long-range extend modes and DIP-switch setup are the default choice for Indian installers for a reason. Your camera vendor’s technician has configured one before, and that familiarity cuts both installation time and repair time when something fails at 6 pm on a Friday. Familiar gear gets fixed faster.

Stay put if fast local RMA matters more than features. A dead switch in Indore or Coimbatore gets exchanged through a nearby collection centre instead of a metro round trip. When we audit MSME networks at Sirius Star, roughly half the D-Link estates we see should stay exactly where they are. The upgrade conversation is usually about the core switch or the Wi-Fi, not the whole stack.

The 4 alternatives, honestly compared

Every brand below is one Sirius Star supplies and services in India. We make money either way, which is exactly why we can be straight with you.

Closest swap

TP-Link

Same price class, a stronger cloud story

Best for: SMBs that want cloud-managed switching and Wi-Fi without an enterprise bill
  • Omada SDN puts the gateway, switches and access points in one dashboard, with cheap or free licensing
  • Make-in-India manufacturing for routers and switches, plus new service centres in Lucknow and Chandigarh
  • Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5G/10G SMB gear is already shipping in India, so the platform has headroom

The honest downside: Enterprise support depth still trails Cisco-class vendors, and the consumer image of the brand can be a hard sell with some auditors.

Make in India

Digisol

The GeM-friendly Indian OEM

Best for: Government tenders and buyers with a Make-in-India procurement preference
  • Indian OEM from the Smartlink group with manufacturing in Goa, which simplifies GeM and PSU paperwork
  • PoE switches and FTTH gear priced head-to-head with the imported brands
  • Local warranty handling, no overseas escalation chain

The honest downside: The enterprise portfolio is thinner. If you need deep Layer 3 features or a large Wi-Fi estate, you will outgrow it.

The step up

HPE Aruba

Enterprise features, enterprise bill

Best for: Growing companies standardising wired plus wireless on one vendor with central policy
  • Aruba Central gives real per-user policy, 802.1X and RF visibility, the deepest management in this list
  • Instant On covers the small-office end, so one vendor can span 10 users to 10,000
  • HPE enterprise support in India, with defined SLAs procurement teams can sign off

The honest downside: Expect two to four times the per-port price of D-Link or TP-Link, plus subscription licences on the enterprise line.

Campus scale

Alcatel-Lucent

The quiet enterprise workhorse

Best for: Hotels, hospitals and campuses that need Layer 3 backbones built for a 7-10 year life
  • OmniSwitch stacking and Layer 3 depth at prices that often undercut the big enterprise names
  • Strong hospitality and healthcare references, including converged voice and data
  • Hardware engineered for long lifecycles, which suits buildings that rewire once a decade

The honest downside: A smaller India partner network than the others here, so lead times and local hands depend on your city.

When switching from D-Link pays off, and when it does not

The switch pays off when you cross roughly 150 users or open a second site. At that point you want one dashboard that shows every switch and access point, per-user policy, and 802.1X so a visitor’s laptop cannot plug into the accounts VLAN. TP-Link Omada gets you most of that at D-Link money. HPE Aruba gets you all of it at two to four times the price.

It also pays off when Wi-Fi is the complaint. Conference rooms that choke during town halls and warehouses with dead racks are radio planning problems, and Aruba’s RF tooling is the strongest here. On a tighter budget, TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 7 access points give you a hardware jump for less money.

It does not pay off when the real problem is your internet link or an ageing router. We meet buyers ready to replace forty switches when the fix was a Rs 25,000 gateway. It also rarely pays to retire mid-life access switches. A mixed estate is normal practice: keep D-Link at the edge, put Omada, Aruba or an OmniSwitch core in the middle, and let the old gear finish its life.

“We assumed we had outgrown D-Link everywhere. The audit showed only the server room needed a change. We swapped two core switches to Aruba, kept forty D-Link access switches, and half the money we had budgeted stayed in the bank.”

Alternatives to D-Link in India FAQ

Common questions Indian buyers ask before switching brands.

Is D-Link still good enough for business networking in India?
Yes, for flat networks with under about 100 users, CCTV PoE backbones, and buyers who value the 220+ collection-centre service network. It stops being enough when you need central policy across sites, 802.1X port security, or dense Wi-Fi, which is where TP-Link Omada and HPE Aruba take over.
What is the closest like-for-like alternative to D-Link in India?
TP-Link. Hardware prices sit in the same band, India stock is comparable, and the Omada SDN dashboard is a clear step up from Nuclias. Most D-Link-to-TP-Link moves happen for exactly that reason: same budget, better management.
Which D-Link alternative works best for GeM or Make-in-India tenders?
Digisol. It is an Indian OEM from the Smartlink group with manufacturing in Goa, which simplifies Make-in-India scoring and PSU paperwork. Just check the feature list carefully, because the portfolio is thinner at the enterprise end.
Do I need to replace every D-Link switch when I upgrade?
Almost never. The usual pattern is to replace the core switch and the Wi-Fi first, keep D-Link access switches until end of life, and standardise on the new brand at each refresh cycle. That spreads the cost over two or three financial years.
Which brand gives the best warranty support outside metro cities?
D-Link itself, which is exactly why leaving it is not automatic. Its collection-centre network reaches 130+ locations. TP-Link is expanding with new service centres, HPE Aruba is strongest in metros, and Alcatel-Lucent depends on the partner in your city. Sirius Star wraps whichever brand you pick with one escalation path and a written quote in 24 working hours.
