When AMD still fits

The question usually arrives framed as AMD or Intel. That is already the wrong question. Both run your workloads and both have India supply. What a CIO is actually being asked is whether the fleet stands on one silicon roadmap or two, because two roadmaps mean two validation cycles and two firmware trees to keep straight at every refresh.
The numbers moved while nobody was watching. AMD took a record 46.2 percent of x86 server CPU revenue in Q1 2026, which means nearly half of what the world spent on server processors went to EPYC. That is no longer a challenger position, and the board optics have flipped with it. A CIO standardising on EPYC in 2026 is making a defensible, mainstream call rather than a brave one. Where AMD still costs you honesty is at the edges. The client fleet is one edge. Intel keeps roughly 70 percent of commercial PC share and its vPro manageability is what most estates already use for out-of-band control, so ripping that out to match your servers rarely pays. The AI accelerator stack is the other edge. Instinct is a real merchant alternative to NVIDIA now, but ROCm is younger than CUDA and the out-of-box experience still has rough days. When switching from AMD pays off, and when it does not
Switching a server estate to AMD from an Intel standard is not a weekend cutover, and it should not be sold as one. New racks go EPYC, the existing Intel fleet stays in place until its own refresh, and the two run side by side for a cycle. That parallel period is not waste. It is the part that keeps a board presentation calm.
The real work is validation, not installation. Your golden images and monitoring baselines were tuned for Xeon, and they need re-testing on EPYC before production, not during it. Firmware and BIOS defaults differ, and a setting that was safe on Intel is not automatically safe on AMD. Budget the test window. Skipping it is how a clean migration becomes a 2am incident that should have been a Tuesday afternoon.
Cost is where the case closes. EPYC’s higher core density means fewer sockets for the same work, which shows up as lower licensing on per-core software and a smaller power bill per rack.
