Cohesity for CFO in India: the renewal, not the logo
Where Cohesity earns its capacity-based price on a growing estate, and where the year-three math sends a CFO to Veeam instead. In plain numbers.
When Cohesity still fits
Before you switch, check whether you are actually in the group that should stay put. We sell and service Cohesity, so this list is honest.
The renewal quote came in on a Tuesday, twelve pages, and the number on page one had grown 31 percent against last year. Nobody circled it. The IT lead was not wrong that the estate had grown, more virtual machines, a new object store, the Veritas NetBackup boxes still ticking over in the corner. The CFO was about to be wrong about something else. The price had climbed because Cohesity licences on capacity, and the data had quietly doubled while everyone was looking at the feature list. The logo on the box was never the line item that moved.
Cohesity earns the price on the thing a CFO can actually put in a board pack: consolidation. After it bought the Veritas enterprise data protection business in December 2024, it became the largest data protection software vendor by market share, serving over 12,000 customers and named a Gartner Leader for the sixth year running. For a finance desk the number that matters is not the market share, it is that DataProtect, FortKnox cyber-vaulting and the legacy NetBackup estate can sit under one platform and one renewal. Three contracts on three dates become one conversation. That is a real saving on admin time and audit effort, and it is the case Cohesity is genuinely good at.
The second number only shows up in year three. Capacity-based licensing is fair when your data is flat and punishing when it is not. A 40 percent data growth rate turns a clean year-one quote into a year-three bill that lands like a surprise, and the escalation is usually on a page nobody reads until renewal week. Ask for the three-year capacity assumption in writing before you sign, not after. The platform is not the risk. The growth curve baked into the licence is the risk, and it is the one thing a CFO is positioned to catch and nobody else is.
The honest amber belongs on the desk before the board hears it. Cohesity is priced above Veeam and Commvault on a mid-size estate, its capacity model gets unpredictable as data grows, and the post-Veritas portfolio is broad enough that you can end up paying for modules you never switch on. If your estate is stable and mid-size, or budget certainty matters more than one console, price Veeam beside it and read the per-terabyte math honestly. If you are consolidating three renewals and value one platform your team already runs, Cohesity is squarely in frame. We resell Cohesity, Veeam and Commvault, so read this knowing that.
Cohesity at a glance
The brand you are benchmarking everything else against.
Cohesity
- What it is
- Cohesity’s data protection stack: DataProtect backup and recovery, FortKnox cyber-vaulting, DataHawk threat detection, the NetBackup appliances from the Veritas estate, and the Helios management plane.
- Current India line-up
- Cohesity Data Cloud, DataProtect self-managed or as-a-service, NetBackup and NetBackup Flex appliances, Veritas Alta SaaS, FortKnox, SmartFiles and SiteContinuity DR orchestration.
- Why a CFO buys it
- Consolidation. Three separate backup renewals fold into one platform and one contract date, which cuts admin time, audit effort and the number of vendors finance has to manage.
- Where it fits best
- Larger or fast-growing estates already carrying a Veritas NetBackup footprint, where one platform across backup and cyber-vaulting is worth a premium over the cheapest per-terabyte quote.
- The honest gaps
- Capacity-based licensing that climbs with data growth, a price above Veeam and Commvault at mid-size, and a broad portfolio where unused modules can still sit on the invoice.
- Sirius Star relationship
- Authorised Cohesity reseller in India. We quote and service it alongside Veeam and Commvault, the names a finance desk benchmarks it against, from Vashi, Navi Mumbai.
The 4 alternatives, honestly compared
Every brand below is one Sirius Star supplies and services in India. We make money either way, which is exactly why we can be straight with you.
Cohesity DataProtect
One platform, one renewal, three contracts retired.
- Folds backup, recovery and cyber-vaulting into a single platform and contract
- Absorbs the legacy NetBackup estate rather than forcing a rip-and-replace
- Immutable snapshots and FortKnox vaulting for the ransomware and audit case
The honest downside: Capacity-based licensing means the bill tracks your data growth, so the year-three number needs to be modelled before you sign, not after.

The comparison most mid-size CFOs run first.
- Where Cohesity’s single platform wins and where Veeam’s price wins
- Capacity licensing against Veeam’s per-workload model, side by side
- The honest call for a stable mid-size estate versus a growing one
The honest downside: If your estate is stable and mid-size, the consolidation premium may buy headroom you will not use, and Veeam lands cheaper.
View the Cohesity vs Veeam page →Cohesity vs Commvault
Two enterprise platforms, two very different licence shapes.
- Capacity model against Commvault’s licensing, compared for a growing estate
- Retention and governance depth weighed against consolidation simplicity
- Where each one’s three-year cost actually lands for India
The honest downside: Both are enterprise platforms with enterprise pricing, so a mid-market estate may be paying for scale it does not have yet.

The shortlist when the renewal number stops making sense.
- The honest field of backup and DR options priced for India
- Where a cheaper or simpler platform is the right finance call
- What you keep and what you give up by moving off Cohesity
The honest downside: Switching backup platforms carries a migration and retraining cost, so the licence saving has to clear that bar before a move makes sense.

When switching from Cohesity pays off, and when it does not
Moving your backup onto Cohesity pays back when the driver is consolidation, not a feature nobody uses. If you are carrying a Veritas NetBackup estate plus a second backup tool plus a separate cyber-vault, and each one renews on its own date, folding them into one platform cuts the admin, the audit surface and the number of vendors finance chases every quarter. That is the case where the premium is honest and the saving shows up in headcount time, not just the licence line.
It does not pay off when your data is growing fast and you sign the capacity licence without modelling the curve. This is the whole decision for a finance desk. A quote that looks fair at today’s terabytes becomes a different number when the estate doubles, and the escalation is usually filed on a page nobody reads until renewal week. Get the three-year capacity assumption in writing, keep the old platform running until the migration is proven, and treat any module you have not switched on in ninety days as a line to drop. The consolidation saving is real. The growth surprise is avoidable.
The break-even is who signs the renewal. If you answer to a board that wants fewer vendors and one audit trail, Cohesity is the consolidation play and the premium is defensible. If you answer to a budget that needs the number to be predictable, price Veeam beside it and let the per-terabyte math and the growth curve decide. We supply Cohesity, Veeam and Commvault, so we quote the stay-cheaper case as seriously as the consolidate case.
