Cohesity for IT Managers in India: one platform, cleaner recovery
Cohesity folds backup, recovery and a cyber vault into one platform, so a small team stops stitching agents together and can actually prove a restore.
When Cohesity still fits
Before you switch, check whether you are actually in the group that should stay put. We sell and service Cohesity, so this list is honest.
Cohesity gets shortlisted after a bad night. The one where a restore was supposed to take an hour and took most of a shift, or worse, the week a ransomware note showed up and nobody could say for certain the backups were clean. An IT Manager is not measured on how pretty the backup dashboard looks. You are measured on recovery time when it counts, and on how many nights a month the backup job pages you. Cohesity’s pitch is to collapse that whole mess into one platform you can actually prove.
The consolidation is the real draw for a small team. After the Veritas combination in December 2024, Cohesity carries DataProtect, NetBackup and Veritas Alta under one roof, managed through Helios. Instead of a backup product here, a DR tool there, and a separate story for cloud workloads, you get one plane. For a two-person team that is fewer consoles to learn and fewer 3 AM handoffs where the person who knew the runbook has already left.
The part buyers underrate is the cyber vault. FortKnox gives you an isolated, immutable copy that ransomware cannot reach, and DataHawk watches for the signs an attack is already inside your data. This is the difference between hoping your backups are clean and being able to show an auditor a recovery point that is provably untouched. For a regulated Indian estate heading into a DPDP or RBI review, that evidence is the whole point.
Here is what we say out loud. Cohesity is priced at a premium and the capacity-based licensing can drift as your data grows, so it needs planning, not a back-of-envelope guess. It is also not beginner-friendly. The practitioner community is smaller than Veeam’s, and setup rewards a team that reads the manual. Below a certain data size, honestly, Veeam or Acronis will serve a lean team for less. We will tell you which side of that line your estate sits on before you commit.

The 3 alternatives, honestly compared
Every brand below is one Sirius Star supplies and services in India. We make money either way, which is exactly why we can be straight with you.
Veeam
The community default for backup
- Largest practitioner community, so hiring and troubleshooting are easier
- Per-workload licensing is predictable and easy to size
- Strong across VMware, Hyper-V, Microsoft 365 and physical servers
The honest downside: Cyber-vault and threat-detection depth is thinner than Cohesity’s FortKnox and DataHawk.

Backup plus appliance in one box
- Unified data protection with an appliance option, less to assemble
- Built-in immutability and DR orchestration
- Simple enough for a single admin to run
The honest downside: Enterprise scale and cloud-native breadth trail Cohesity once data grows past a few sites.

Backup and security in one agent
- Single agent for backup, anti-malware and patching
- Low per-seat cost and quick to stand up
- Cloud storage included in the subscription
The honest downside: Not built for large, mixed enterprise estates. Heavy workloads outgrow it.

When switching from Cohesity pays off, and when it does not
Moving your backup platform is not a weekend job, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not run the migration. The honest question for an IT Manager is whether the switch buys back recovery confidence and fewer paging nights. If your current setup cannot prove a clean restore, or ransomware has already made the point for you, Cohesity earns the project. If your backups are boring and reliable, do not fix what is not broken.
The migration runs in parallel, which is the safe way. You stand up Cohesity alongside the incumbent, point it at your workloads, and run both until the new recovery points are proven. Nobody rips out a working backup on day one. On a mid-size estate we plan a phased cutover over a few weeks, most critical systems first, and we keep the old jobs running until the restores test clean. The learning curve is front-loaded, so budget a week for your admin to get comfortable with Helios.
What changes is the quiet part. One console instead of three, a cyber vault you can point an auditor at, and recovery you have actually tested rather than hoped for. What you must plan for is cost. Capacity-based licensing grows with your data, so we size it against your real three-year growth, not today’s snapshot. That conversation happens before the PO, not in the renewal that surprises you.
