The Short Version

Cohesity for BFSI in India: scale-out recovery you can prove

The question arrives as which backup tool. Wrong question. A bank buys Cohesity for the restore an RBI auditor asks it to prove, at scale, on a Tuesday it did not choose.

The verdict in one line

Cohesity fits BFSI when your data has outgrown a single backup server, immutability is non-negotiable, and one platform across backup, vault and DR beats four tools. Size it to the regulated workloads, not the demo. We sell and service Cohesity, so this stays honest.

When Cohesity still fits

Before you switch, check whether you are actually in the group that should stay put. We sell and service Cohesity, so this list is honest.

A BFSI estate does not run on backup, it runs on the restore it can prove, and by the time a bank reaches Cohesity the backup has usually stopped being one server and started being a sprawl. Core banking, loan origination, the KYC store, the policy admin, each one under an RBI expectation and a DPDP duty, each one growing faster than the tool that was sized for it three years ago. Cohesity fits that estate when the data has outgrown the old approach and immutability is a line nobody gets to cross.

The reason it fits is architectural, not marketing. Cohesity is scale-out, so you add nodes instead of forklifting a bigger box, and its SpanFS file system writes immutable snapshots that ransomware cannot alter inside their retention window. DataProtect handles the backup, FortKnox holds a cyber-vaulted copy off to one side, DataHawk watches for the threat before it spreads, and the whole thing reports from one console instead of four. After the Veritas combination in December 2024, that one platform also carries NetBackup underneath it, which matters if your bank already runs NetBackup and does not want to throw the estate away to modernise it.

We sell and service Cohesity, so read the next line knowing that. It is not the cheap option, and it is not the simple one. If your estate is small and virtual and a lighter tool covers it today, Cohesity is more platform than you need, and we will say so on the first call. Where it earns its keep is scale and cyber-resilience together, the point where a bank has too much data for one server and too much risk for a backup it cannot prove clean. Most Indian BFSI estates that call us are already there, or one audit away from it.

The 4 alternatives, honestly compared

Every brand below is one Sirius Star supplies and services in India. We make money either way, which is exactly why we can be straight with you.

Core estate

Cohesity DataProtect

Immutable backup and instant mass restore for the regulated core

Best for: Bank and NBFC core estates that must prove a clean recovery
  • Immutable SpanFS snapshots
  • Instant mass restore of hundreds of VMs
  • Self-managed or delivered as a service

The honest downside: Capacity-based licensing gets less predictable as data grows. We size it to the regulated workloads first, not the whole estate, so the bill stays honest.

Cyber vault

Cohesity FortKnox

An isolated, immutable copy for the day the primary estate is hit

Best for: RBI resilience and a recovery path that survives ransomware
  • Air-gapped, immutable copy in a Cohesity-managed vault
  • Clean-room recovery testing
  • Reduces the pressure to ever pay a ransom

The honest downside: It is a vault, not the primary backup. It sits alongside DataProtect, it does not replace it. Two layers, one workflow.

Threat detection

Cohesity DataHawk

Finds the ransomware and the exposed data before an auditor does

Best for: Banks that must show they detect a threat, not just recover from it
  • Threat intelligence scanning of backups
  • Sensitive-data classification for DPDP
  • Anomaly detection on backup behaviour

The honest downside: It watches and classifies. It is an add-on to the platform, not a standalone product. Buy it when detection and DPDP classification are part of the remit.

DR drills

Cohesity SiteContinuity

Turns an RBI DR drill from a weekend into a documented failover

Best for: Teams that must show a tested, timed failover to a regulator
  • Automated DR orchestration
  • One-click, documented failover with an RTO
  • Runbooks an auditor accepts

The honest downside: It orchestrates DR for what the platform already protects. If you never run formal DR drills you may not need it yet. Most regulated banks do.

When switching from Cohesity pays off, and when it does not

If you already run Cohesity and someone is pitching you off it, here is the honest test. Switching pays off in one case, a genuine mismatch, where the estate shrank, or a lighter tool now covers what you actually protect, and you are paying platform money for server-tool needs. A fresh audit finding that Cohesity cannot cover a specific workload would be another. Cost on its own, usually not, because the platform bill often reflects the scale you actually have, not waste.

It does not pay off when the complaint is the capacity-based invoice. Yes, it grows with your data, and yes, that reads uncomfortably at renewal. But moving a live BFSI backup estate to a new tool means months of parallel running, re-tested restores, and a fresh set of things that can fail at 2am with a lender’s KYC traffic on the floor. Before you switch, we run the numbers both ways and tell you when the cheaper line on the quote is the more expensive decision. Sometimes the honest answer is right-size the licence and switch off the copies you stopped needing.

“A Mumbai NBFC came to us after its backup server ran out of room mid-quarter, sure the answer was a bigger box. The real problem was that one box could no longer prove a restore under an RBI timeline. We sized Cohesity DataProtect with a FortKnox vault, proved a timed recovery in the first drill, and the auditor got the documented failover without the bank buying hardware it would outgrow again in a year.”

Alternatives to Cohesity in India FAQ

Common questions Indian buyers ask before switching brands.

Is Cohesity suitable for RBI and DPDP compliance in India?
Cohesity is not a certification, it is the platform you use to meet the expectation. For BFSI that means immutable backups, a tested restore with a documented RTO, threat detection on the copies, and reporting an auditor accepts. DataProtect, FortKnox, DataHawk and SiteContinuity cover those between them. Sirius Star sizes and configures the mix so your controls map to what RBI and the DPDP Act ask for.
What did the Veritas acquisition change for a Cohesity buyer?
In December 2024 Cohesity completed its combination with the Veritas enterprise data protection business, which brought NetBackup under the same roof. For a bank that already runs NetBackup, that means a modernisation path that does not throw the existing estate away. For a new buyer it means one vendor behind both the modern scale-out platform and the older enterprise engine. We help you decide which side of that you actually need.
Is Cohesity too expensive or complex for an NBFC?
It can be, and we will tell you when it is. Cohesity uses capacity-based licensing that grows with your data, and it is a platform, not a point tool, so it rewards scale and cyber-resilience needs over a small virtual estate. If a lighter tool covers you today, that is the honest quote we write. Where Cohesity pays off is the point where data volume and ransomware risk arrive together.
How does Cohesity defend a BFSI estate against ransomware?
Cohesity writes immutable SpanFS snapshots that cannot be altered inside their retention window, keeps an air-gapped copy in a FortKnox vault, and scans backups with DataHawk so an infected copy is caught before you restore it. That gives a bank a clean recovery path even when the primary estate is hit, which is the difference between paying a ransom and restoring from a copy you trust.
