Commvault for BFSI in India: recovery you can prove
You do not buy Commvault for the backup. You buy it for the clean restore an RBI inspection asks you to prove, with the clock running.
When Commvault still fits
Before you switch, check whether you are actually in the group that should stay put. We sell and service Commvault, so this list is honest.
A BFSI buyer does not get measured on whether last night ran green. You get measured on the morning something breaks, when a regulator or a board asks whether the loan book, the KYC store and the policy admin system can come back clean inside the window you committed to. Commvault fits that estate when it is wide and mixed, part on-prem, part on Azure, part sitting inside Microsoft 365 that your inspection now treats as records. One platform holds all of it, so your team learns one tool instead of four, and the recovery story is one story instead of a stack of exceptions nobody wrote down.
The reason it fits is not the feature list, it is the coverage. Commvault protects databases, virtual machines, SaaS, containers and the endpoints your branch officers carry, and it indexes what it protects, so a granular recovery is a search and not an excavation. For a bank that matters, because the request is rarely restore everything. It is restore this one mailbox, this one table, this one customer’s document trail, and prove when it was last touched. That is the boring capability that decides an audit, and it is the one nobody demos.
It fits less well if your whole estate is one legacy database on hardware you are contractually stuck with, and you never touch cloud or SaaS. That is a narrower job, and a lighter tool may cost you less to run. We will tell you when that is your situation, because a Commvault licence you use a third of is worse value than a smaller tool you use fully. But most Indian BFSI estates in 2026 are not narrow. They are spread across cloud and SaaS, they carry a ransomware target on the primary copy, and they need a recovery a junior officer can run at 6am without waking the one person who understands the old system. Commvault is built for exactly that shape.

The 4 alternatives, honestly compared
Every brand below is one Sirius Star supplies and services in India. We make money either way, which is exactly why we can be straight with you.
Commvault Cloud (Backup and Recovery)
The base a bank runs on: one platform across on-prem, cloud and Microsoft 365
- Single console across on-prem, cloud and SaaS
- Granular, indexed recovery down to a file, table or mailbox
- Air-gapped and immutable copies as the default posture
The honest downside: It is a platform, not a point tool. You pay for breadth, so size it to the workloads that actually hold regulated data, not every server in the rack.

Assumes the primary copy gets hit, and keeps a recovery path anyway
- Air-gapped, immutable copies isolated from the production estate
- Anomaly detection that flags a backup behaving like an attack
- Recovery readiness a board and an inspection can both see
The honest downside: It layers on the core platform, it is not a standalone buy. If you have no core backup yet, start with Backup and Recovery first.
View the Commvault Cyber Recovery page →Commvault Cleanroom Recovery
Rebuilds a clean environment on demand, so you recover into safety not back into the breach
- Recovers into an isolated, clean cloud environment
- Lets you rehearse a full restore before the day you need it
- Documents the drill for the inspection that asks to see it
The honest downside: It runs in cloud, so you plan for the egress and the runtime cost of a real drill. That is a line item, not a surprise, when we size it up front.
View the Commvault Cleanroom Recovery page →Commvault HyperScale X
The on-prem appliance for estates that must keep a copy inside the building
- Scale-out appliance with the software built in
- Keeps a hardened on-prem copy for residency needs
- Pairs with the cloud copy for the offsite rule
The honest downside: It is hardware you rack and run, so it carries a capex and a datacentre footprint. If your policy allows cloud-first, the software-only route is lighter.

| Factor | Commvault | Commvault Cloud (Backup and Recovery) | Commvault Cyber Recovery | Commvault Cleanroom Recovery | Commvault HyperScale X |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Immutable, air-gapped copies (ransomware, RBI resilience) | Default across the platform | Immutable object storage | Isolated air-gapped vault | Recovers into a clean room | Hardened on-prem appliance copy |
| Proving a clean restore to an inspection | Indexed, granular recovery | Point-in-time file and table restore | Anomaly-checked recovery | Rehearsed, documented drill | On-prem restore for residency |
| RPO and RTO control | Set per workload | Tightest for core databases | Recovery-first design | Full-environment RTO | Local restore speed |
| Coverage of regulated data | Databases, VMs, SaaS, endpoints | Full core estate | The workloads you nominate | Whole environment rebuild | On-site workloads |
| Microsoft 365 as a bank record | Covered on the platform | Native M365 protection | M365 in the recovery scope | M365 in the clean-room rebuild | Pairs with cloud for M365 |
| When a BFSI shop needs it | Always, the base | Core regulated workloads | Once ransomware is a board topic | Once DR drills are mandated | When residency keeps a copy local |
When switching from Commvault pays off, and when it does not
If you already run a backup tool and someone is pitching a rip and replace to Commvault, here is the honest test. The switch pays off in one case: your estate has grown wide and mixed, your current tool covers the cloud and SaaS parts thinly, and a fresh audit finding says a specific regulated workload is not properly protected. That is a real reason to move, because the risk is now written down by someone with authority. A better price on the quote, on its own, usually is not.
It does not pay off when the only complaint is the renewal number. Moving a live BFSI backup estate means months of parallel running, every restore re-tested, and a fresh set of things that can fail at 2am while a lender’s KYC traffic is on the floor. ₹250 crore is the DPDP penalty ceiling for failing reasonable security safeguards, and a migration window with a logging gap is exactly the kind of failure that question gets asked about later. Before you switch, we run the numbers both ways and tell you when the cheaper line is the more expensive decision. Sometimes the straight answer is stay, tune the licence, and switch off the workloads you stopped needing. We have written that quote before, and those clients are still clients.
