Top 3 alternatives to Commvault for Backup and DR in India
Top 3 alternatives to Commvault for Backup and DR in India
Cohesity, Veeam and Veritas NetBackup, weighed honestly against Commvault for Indian enterprise backup and DR estates.
When Commvault still fits
Before you switch, check whether you are actually in the group that should stay put. We sell and service Commvault, so this list is honest.
Stay with Commvault if you actually use the breadth. Teams that run backup, archive and e-discovery from the one console are getting what they paid for, and no rival replaces all three without bolt-ons. If your compliance team pulls evidence from Commvault every quarter, the platform is earning its keep.
Stay if Cleanroom Recovery is in your ransomware runbook. Rebuilding critical systems in an isolated Azure environment after an attack is one of the strongest recovery stories in the market, and Indian BFSI and pharma security teams that have already signed it off rarely benefit from repeating that audit with a new vendor.
Stay if Metallic SaaS is covering your Microsoft 365 and Salesforce estate well. It is the most mature vendor-managed backup service in the market, and unpicking it just to change your data centre backup engine is usually the wrong sequence.
Stay if your workload list is genuinely odd. IBM iSeries, older databases, mixed UNIX: Commvault protects estates that force other vendors into awkward workarounds. The complexity you pay for exists precisely because the coverage does. In Indian PSU, insurance and manufacturing estates, that long tail of legacy systems is usually the real reason Commvault was chosen in the first place, and it rarely disappears on its own.
The honest test is staffing, not features. Commvault rewards a trained backup team. If you have one, and your restore drills pass, stay and negotiate the renewal instead. If backup administration is a part-time duty for a stretched IT team, that is the single strongest signal to look at the three platforms below, because each of them is lighter to run.
Commvault at a glance
The brand you are benchmarking everything else against.
Commvault
- Platform
- Commvault Cloud, with Metallic SaaS and HyperScale X appliances
- Ownership
- Independent, listed on NASDAQ as CVLT since 2006, founded 1996 as a Bell Labs spin-off
- Architecture
- Software, appliance or SaaS. One engine for backup, archive, e-discovery and cyber recovery
- Core strength
- Widest workload and function coverage in one platform, Cleanroom Recovery for ransomware response
- Known trade-off
- Operational complexity. The platform rewards a trained, dedicated backup team
- India support
- Sold and serviced through partners. Sirius Star supplies licences, sizing and AMC from Vashi, Navi Mumbai
The 3 alternatives, honestly compared
Every brand below is one Sirius Star supplies and services in India. We make money either way, which is exactly why we can be straight with you.
Veeam
The virtualisation-native platform that became the market’s revenue leader.
- Fastest time to value in the category: most teams are protecting workloads within days, not months
- Instant VM recovery and granular restores from single file to full application stack
- Portable Veeam Universal Licensing runs on your own hardware, with the largest admin talent pool in India
The honest downside: Coverage thins out at the edges. No mainframe-class or IBM i support, and archive plus e-discovery need third-party tools that Commvault includes.
View the Veeam page →Cohesity
Backup, file services and cyber vaulting on one scale-out platform.
- FortKnox isolated cyber vault gives an immutable copy your security team can audit once and trust
- Scale-out cluster grows node by node instead of forklift upgrades
- Post-merger portfolio now spans both modern scale-out and the classic Veritas NetBackup line, the largest data protection footprint in the market
The honest downside: The cluster model ties capacity to nodes, so you are buying into an appliance economics story. Indicative global median spend sits near US$25,000 a year, and consolidation benefits only arrive if you actually consolidate.
View the Cohesity page →Veritas NetBackup
The 1987-heritage heavyweight for the largest, most mixed estates.
- Deepest legacy workload coverage in the market, including platforms Commvault treats as edge cases
- Flex appliances and Alta SaaS modernise deployment without abandoning proven runbooks
- Decades of certified admins and audit history inside Indian banks, telcos and PSUs
The honest downside: You are trading one heavyweight for another. NetBackup matches Commvault’s complexity more than it escapes it, and it now sits under the Cohesity roof after the December 2024 acquisition.

| Factor | Commvault | Cohesity | Veeam | Veritas NetBackup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Indicative price band | Custom enterprise quotes, modular bundles | Per-workload subscription, predictable as you grow | Global median near US$25,000 a year | List pricing around US$2,575 per TB per year |
| Deployment models | Software, HyperScale X appliance, Commvault Cloud SaaS | Software only, your hardware or partner appliances | Scale-out cluster, appliance or SaaS | Software, Flex appliance, Alta SaaS |
| Ransomware stance | ThreatWise deception plus Cleanroom Recovery in Azure | Inline malware detection plus orchestrated DR | FortKnox isolated vault plus anomaly detection | Recovery Vault plus isolated recovery environment |
| Workload breadth | Widest overall, IBM iSeries to Kubernetes | VMware, physical, cloud, Microsoft 365, Kubernetes | Modern estates: VMs, NAS, SaaS, Kubernetes | Deepest legacy coverage: UNIX, databases, mainframe-class |
| Team it takes to run | Trained, dedicated backup admins | Lean teams manage comfortably | Moderate, cluster operations skills | Trained, dedicated backup admins |
| Best fit audience | Regulated enterprises wanting one platform | Virtualised estates with lean IT teams | Consolidators with big on-prem estates | Largest, most heterogeneous estates |
When switching from Commvault pays off, and when it does not
Switching away from Commvault pays off most often on operational grounds. If your backup admin left and the replacement hire is struggling, a Veeam estate is simpler to staff in India than any other enterprise platform. The licence saving is usually secondary to the staffing relief.
It pays off when you were sold breadth you never deployed. Plenty of Indian enterprises run Commvault purely as VM backup, with archive and e-discovery modules idle. At that point you are paying platform prices for point-product usage, and Veeam or Cohesity will do the actual job for less operational weight.
It also pays off at appliance refresh. If your HyperScale X nodes are approaching end of life, the hardware spend is coming either way, which makes it the cheapest possible moment to benchmark Cohesity’s cluster economics or Veeam on commodity servers against the renewal.
It does not pay off if compliance depends on the platform. Archive retention, legal hold and e-discovery evidence built up inside Commvault over years is expensive to re-platform, and regulators do not accept ‘we migrated’ as an excuse for a gap. Keep the estate, fix the sizing.
And it does not pay off mid-contract. Expect a three to six month dual-run window, decisions about legacy retention, and a fresh security review under the DPDP Act, including where immutable copies physically live. Sirius Star sizes your actual estate, benchmarks two or three platforms against your restore drills, and puts a GST-itemised comparison quote in front of you within 24 working hours.
