Commvault for CFOs: what you actually sign up to pay
Commvault is priced for scale, not a first backup tool. Here is the three-year cost, the OpEx you commit to, and when a cheaper name is the honest call.
When Commvault still fits
Before you switch, check whether you are actually in the group that should stay put. We sell and service Commvault, so this list is honest.
The Commvault quote usually lands the same way: several pages, a three-year term, and a number that makes the cheaper tools on the shortlist look obvious. Before you sign the cheaper one, read what the term actually covers. Commvault is not billed as a backup app, it is billed as a data-protection platform, and the two are different purchases with different three-year shapes.
It fits when your estate is genuinely mixed. Physical servers in Vashi, virtual machines, a Microsoft 365 tenant, workloads on Azure, a database team that will not accept a four-hour recovery window. One platform covering all of it, with granular recovery and real indexing, is worth more than three point tools that each need their own licence, their own admin, and their own renewal. Commvault has led the Gartner Magic Quadrant for backup fourteen years running, which is not marketing, it is a signal the breadth is real.
The number you carry is total cost over the term, not the sticker on page one. Commvault sits in the one-to-five-lakh band for a reason, and the honest CFO question is coverage per rupee, not price per rupee. Count the point tools it replaces, the admin hours it consolidates, and the audit you do not fail because recovery is provable. Against that, a low first-year quote from a single-workload tool can be the more expensive decision by year three.
It does not fit a small, simple estate. If you protect one or two workloads, if you do not have a person who can own a platform with a real learning curve, Commvault is depth you will pay for and not use. Setup is involved, administration wants dedicated expertise, and for an SMB that cost is real. On a single workload, a Veeam or an Acronis will cost less and annoy you less. Buy the platform when the estate justifies the platform.

The 3 alternatives, honestly compared
Every brand below is one Sirius Star supplies and services in India. We make money either way, which is exactly why we can be straight with you.
Cohesity
Backup and data management on one platform
- Folds backup and file and object storage into one buy
- Strong ransomware recovery story
- Now owns Veritas NetBackup, so one vendor covers legacy too
The honest downside: The appliance-led model can mean a larger upfront footprint than a pure subscription.
View the Cohesity page →Veeam
The mid-market default that costs less to run
- Lower total cost for standard VM and cloud estates
- Simple licensing that finance can actually forecast
- Large India partner base and skills pool
The honest downside: Coverage narrows against Commvault once you add heavy databases and mainframe-class workloads.
View the Veeam page →Arcserve
Backup and DR in one box for smaller estates
- All-in-one backup and DR appliances
- Predictable pricing for a smaller estate
- Straightforward to run without a specialist
The honest downside: Scales less gracefully than Commvault once the estate and workload mix grow.

When switching from Commvault pays off, and when it does not
Switching to Commvault pays off when the thing you are buying is coverage, not a cheaper line item. The saving does not show up in the first invoice, it shows up in the tools you stop renewing and the audit you stop dreading. If you are running one product for VMs, another for Microsoft 365, and a spreadsheet for what is actually protected, one platform is the cheaper answer over three years even at a higher sticker.
It does not pay off when the estate is small and stable. Moving a single-workload backup to a platform priced for breadth is paying for seats on a bus you will drive alone. The migration itself has a cost finance forgets: dedicated hours to learn the console, a parallel-running period while old jobs age out, and a short window where two systems both need budget. None of that is a reason to stay, but all of it belongs in the business case.
Sequence it the way you would sequence any risk. Protect the workload that would hurt most first, prove recovery on it, then move the rest once the process is trusted. Do not cut over everything on one weekend to save a month of dual licensing, because the month you save is cheaper than the recovery you cannot prove when something fails mid-move.
And read the term, not the year. A three-year Commvault subscription is an OpEx commitment, so compare it against the OpEx you already run across the point tools, not against a single hardware purchase. If nobody on the team can produce the current all-in backup spend across every tool, that number is the first deliverable, before the vendor call.
