When switching from Nutanix pays off, and when it does not
Moving off VMware is a sequencing decision before it is a technology one, and for the team that runs the estate the order matters more than the licence line. The instinct is to move the biggest cluster first, because that is where the saving looks largest. That is usually the wrong order. The biggest cluster carries the workloads the business cannot lose for an afternoon, and it holds the deepest tool integrations. Move a low-stakes cluster first, prove AHV in your own building, and let the savings pick the order after that.
The parallel-running weeks are not waste. You keep the vSphere estate alive while the first Nutanix cluster earns its place, so a Monday-morning surprise is a routing check, not an outage with the whole floor watching. For an IT Manager the value there is a night’s sleep. You can pause after cluster one and nobody outside the team ever knew there was a plan, which is a very different risk profile from a single weekend cutover that has to go right the first time.
Write down what staying costs your team per quarter in hours, not just the invoice.
