The number that matters
That is what the Nutanix AHV hypervisor adds to your licence bill. AHV ships inside AOS at no separate hypervisor fee. After the Broadcom changes to VMware bundling, that single line is why Indian CIOs are re-quoting their whole virtualization estate this year.
What Nutanix actually replaces in your datacentre
Nutanix collapses three separate purchases into one. The SAN, the server cluster, and the hypervisor licence become a single software layer that runs on commodity nodes. You buy nodes. You add nodes when you need more. There is no separate storage array to size, tier, or forklift.
The platform is Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure, NCI. The storage and data engine is AOS. The hypervisor is AHV, built on KVM and included with AOS. The management plane is Prism. One operator drives the cluster from Prism Central. That is the whole idea. Fewer moving parts, fewer support contracts, fewer 2 a.m. handoffs between storage and virtualization teams.
Below is the line-up Indian buyers ask us to quote most in 2026. India figures are indicative starting bands. Nutanix licenses per core on subscription, so the exact number depends on node count and edition. We send a line-item BOQ in four hours after we read your workload.
NCI Starter
Entry edition for a first cluster. AOS storage, AHV hypervisor, Prism management. Right for a branch, a test estate, or a single-site workload that needs resilience without a SAN.
Per-core subscription · indicative on quote
NCI Pro
The volume edition for production. Adds advanced data services, replication, and richer Prism operations. This is what most Indian mid-market datacentres standardise on.
Per-core subscription · indicative on quote
NCI Ultimate
Everything in Pro plus the full data services set, advanced security, and multi-site scope. Picked by BFSI and large enterprise that want one edition estate-wide.
Per-core subscription · indicative on quote
Nutanix Cloud Manager
NCM is the governance layer. Self-service provisioning, cost visibility, and Flow microsegmentation for east-west security. Useful once you run more than a couple of clusters.
Add-on subscription · per-core, on quote
Nutanix Unified Storage
NUS gives you Files for NFS and SMB shares, Objects for S3 buckets, and Volumes for block. One namespace, managed from Prism, alongside your VMs.
Capacity-tiered · per-TB, on quote
Nutanix Database Service
NDB automates provisioning, patching, and copy data management for Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and more. Database teams get one-click clones without a DBA ticket queue.
Per-database subscription · on quote
Nutanix vs VMware vSAN vs Dell VxRail vs Cisco HyperFlex
Honest take. We deploy Nutanix, and we still sell VMware and Dell. We will not push AHV if your estate is deeply tied to vCenter tooling that would cost more to unwind than to keep.
| Dimension | Nutanix | VMware vSAN / VxRail | Cisco HyperFlex | Azure Stack HCI |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Teams wanting one stack and a clean exit from per-core hypervisor licensing. | Estates already standardised on vCenter, NSX, and the VMware operational model. | Shops where Cisco UCS and ACI are already the datacentre standard. | Microsoft-first estates that want Azure-consistent on-premises clusters. |
| Hypervisor | AHV included with AOS. ESXi also supported if you prefer. | ESXi. Licensed under the current Broadcom bundling. | ESXi or Hyper-V on UCS nodes. | Hyper-V with Azure Arc management. |
| India support | Nutanix support plus Sirius engineers onsite across India. | Broadcom and Dell ProSupport via channel. | Cisco TAC and Smart Net. | Microsoft support plus OEM hardware cover. |
| Where we steer | Default for VMware-exit, mixed workloads, and PSU data residency. | Stay put when NSX and vRealize tooling is load-bearing. | When the network team owns the datacentre and runs UCS. | When the workload roadmap is Azure hybrid first. |

Prism, AOS, and what AHV actually saves you
The savings are operational before they are commercial. A Nutanix cluster is run by one team from one console. The storage admin and the virtualization admin stop filing tickets at each other. That is where the hours go back into the business.
AOS is the distributed storage core. It writes data across every node, keeps replicas for resilience, and handles dedupe, compression, and erasure coding in software. Lose a node and the cluster self-heals onto the survivors. No RAID rebuild window, no SAN controller failover drama.
AHV is the hypervisor. It runs your VMs without an ESXi licence and without a separate vCenter contract. Live migration, snapshots, and affinity rules are built in. For most Indian mid-market workloads AHV does everything the team was paying VMware to do.
Prism is the management plane. Prism Element runs a single cluster. Prism Central runs the whole estate, across sites, with one-click upgrades and capacity forecasting. We have seen one operator run a multi-cluster estate from Prism Central without a dedicated storage specialist on the team. The upgrade story matters. Nutanix rolls AOS, AHV, and firmware in a non-disruptive sequence while VMs keep running.
Nutanix Disaster Recovery handles replication and failover between sites or to Nutanix Cloud Clusters on a public cloud. You write the runbook once. The auditor sees a tested DR plan, not a slide. Sirius engineers run a failover drill during deployment and on a schedule for managed customers.
Refreshing fifty or more servers or endpoints alongside the cluster? Ask about Device Lifecycle Management and DaaS so the refresh lands on one predictable monthly figure instead of a capital spike.

Where Nutanix earns its place in Indian industry
Core banking, payments, fraud
One cluster for the application tier with replicas across sites. AOS resilience plus Nutanix DR meets RBI cyber framework recovery expectations. Data stays in an India datacentre.
SAP, MES, shop-floor apps
AHV runs SAP and MES without an ESXi licence line. NDB clones the SAP database for QA in minutes. Add a node when a new line goes live.
HIS, PACS, EMR
NUS Files holds imaging studies. AOS keeps the HIS database resilient. One small team runs storage and compute from Prism without a separate SAN skillset.
e-Gov, NIC-aligned rollouts
GeM-compliant invoicing on your chosen node OEM. Data residency inside India. Prism keeps the operations simple for lean state IT teams.
VDI and developer platforms
Pairs with Citrix for VDI on a dense, scalable cluster. Add nodes as seats grow rather than re-architecting a SAN.
200-VM estates with one admin
Three boxes become one. One vendor, one console, one upgrade button. Cheaper than two operators chasing storage and virtualization separately.
Nutanix India FAQ
Is AHV really free with Nutanix?
AHV ships inside AOS at no separate hypervisor licence. You pay for NCI on a per-core subscription, and AHV is part of it. There is no extra ESXi line and no separate vCenter contract. That is the main reason teams move off VMware.
Can Nutanix run my existing VMware VMs?
Yes. Nutanix supports ESXi on its nodes if you want to keep VMware for now. When you are ready, Nutanix Move migrates VMs from ESXi or Hyper-V to AHV with minimal downtime. Many Indian buyers run a mixed estate during the transition.
Which servers does Nutanix run on?
Nutanix runs on certified nodes from Dell, Lenovo, HPE, Fujitsu, Cisco, and Nutanix NX appliances. We help you pick the node OEM your team already supports, then size cores and capacity to the workload.
How is Nutanix licensed in India?
NCI is a per-core subscription, sold in Starter, Pro, and Ultimate editions. Add-ons like Cloud Manager and Unified Storage are separate subscriptions. We send a rupee BOQ with the core count and edition spelled out so there is no surprise at renewal.
Does Nutanix keep my data inside India?
Yes. The cluster sits in your datacentre or your chosen India hosting location. Data residency is yours to control, which helps with DPDP Act compliance and any sectoral rule that requires personal data to stay in India.
How long does a Nutanix deployment take?
Software licences activate quickly. Nodes ship on the OEM lead time, usually a few weeks. A standard three-node to eight-node cluster is built, migrated, and handed over in days once hardware lands. We share the timeline before you raise the PO.
What support do I get after go-live?
You get Nutanix support plus Sirius engineers across India. We run a failover drill during deployment and on a schedule for managed customers. The drill output is a one-page report your CISO can take to the board.

P.S. A Navi Mumbai manufacturing group asked us to re-quote their VMware renewal in April. We sized a six-node Nutanix cluster on their existing Dell hardware preference, migrated forty-one VMs over a weekend with Nutanix Move, and dropped their three-year hypervisor licence line to zero. The IT head signed before the old renewal lapsed.
