The verdict in one line

Nutanix earns the BFSI shortlist when your worry is the audit, not the benchmark. Data stays in the Mumbai or Hyderabad datacentre you name, AHV drops the separate hypervisor licence, and every workload leaves one trail your RBI inspection can follow. Keep VMware only where a core banking app is certified on it and nothing else.

When Nutanix still fits

Before you switch, check whether you are actually in the group that should stay put. We sell and service Nutanix, so this list is honest.

A BFSI buyer is not measured on how fast the cluster boots. You are measured on whether the RBI inspection closes without a finding, and whether the DPDP notice on your desk stays hypothetical. Nutanix gets onto the shortlist in Indian banks and NBFCs for one reason that never makes the datasheet. It keeps the whole estate inside one platform you can actually account for at audit time.

The hypervisor is where the money and the risk both hide. VMware by Broadcom now bills the hypervisor as a separate per-core subscription, and this year’s renewal letters have not been gentle. Nutanix ships AHV inside the platform at no extra licence. For a 40-node core banking cluster that is a real line off the renewal, but the audit angle matters more. One vendor, one support path, one place where a change gets logged. Fewer seams is fewer questions you cannot answer.

RBI wants your regulated data in India, and wants you to prove it. Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure runs in your own datacentre in Mumbai, or the DC you already lease in Hyderabad, so the data never leaves the boundary the regulator drew. Nutanix Cloud Clusters can burst into a public region when you need it, but the control plane stays with you and the residency stays where you put it. That is a different conversation from a SaaS console where nobody can tell you which country held a customer record at 2pm on a Tuesday.

The part that decides the BFSI deal is the DR test. A Kochi-based NBFC we sized had a DR site that had quietly been promoted to production over eighteen months of small exceptions, none of them written down. Nutanix keeps the replica honest with built-in async replication and one Prism console that shows you, in writing, when the last failover actually ran. The audit trail is not paperwork here. It is the part of the estate that testifies.

The 4 alternatives, honestly compared

Every brand below is one Sirius Star supplies and services in India. We make money either way, which is exactly why we can be straight with you.

Storage-first

NetApp

A dedicated array when storage is the whole job

Best for: BFSI estates standardised on external SAN or NAS
  • ONTAP snapshots and SnapMirror are trusted inside bank DR runbooks
  • SnapLock WORM copies map to RBI and SEBI record retention
  • Scales storage without touching the compute nodes

The honest downside: You still license a separate hypervisor and run the array and compute as two stacks.

Backup and DR

Veeam

The recovery layer over whatever you run

Best for: Mixed estates that need one backup tool across AHV, VMware, and cloud
  • Hypervisor-agnostic, covers a Nutanix, VMware, or physical estate
  • Immutable backups answer the RBI cyber-resilience ask
  • Granular restore tested from one console

The honest downside: It protects the estate, it does not run it. You still pick an infrastructure platform underneath.

Data protection

Commvault

Compliance-grade backup and retention

Best for: BFSI compliance teams that need long retention and legal hold
  • Policy-driven retention maps cleanly to RBI and DPDP rules
  • One index across on-prem and cloud copies
  • Reporting the audit committee can actually read

The honest downside: Heavier to run day to day, and it is a protection layer, not the primary platform.

Consolidation

Cohesity

Fold backup, files, and DR into one target

Best for: Banks tired of running four separate data silos
  • Owns Veritas NetBackup, so migration paths are supported
  • Immutable snapshots and ransomware scanning built in
  • Consolidates secondary data to cut appliance sprawl

The honest downside: Consolidation is a project, not a switch. The first-year migration needs real planning.

When switching from Nutanix pays off, and when it does not

Switching to Nutanix from a VMware three-tier estate pays off when the renewal letter is the thing forcing your hand and your workloads are ordinary. VDI, core banking on standard databases, file and print, the branch server room. These move without drama, and the AHV licence saving shows up on the first renewal you skip. We sequence it one cluster group at a time, old estate alive until the new one has earned its place, so no RBI-regulated workload cuts over on faith.

It does not pay off, yet, when a core application is certified only on VMware, or when your team holds VMware certifications and nothing else. Certification is not a formality in BFSI. If your core banking vendor supports one hypervisor on paper, that paper wins the argument until they update it. Write down what staying on VMware costs you per year, licence plus support plus the audit seams, and put it next to the migration project cost. If nobody at the bank can produce that annual number, the switch conversation has not actually started.

The honest sequence is boring on purpose. Site survey, a sized quote in 24 working hours with GST broken out, a pilot cluster, then group by group with the DR test run and signed off at each step. Nobody in the branch notices the week their workload moved. That is the goal, not a faster benchmark.

Alternatives to Nutanix in India FAQ

Common questions Indian buyers ask before switching brands.

Does Nutanix keep our data inside India for RBI compliance?
Yes. Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure runs in your own datacentre in Mumbai, Hyderabad, or wherever you lease rack space in India, so regulated data never leaves the boundary RBI expects. If you use Nutanix Cloud Clusters to burst into a public region, you choose the region and keep the control plane, so residency stays a decision you make, not one the platform makes for you.
Do we still pay a separate VMware licence with Nutanix?
No. Nutanix ships its own AHV hypervisor inside the platform at no extra licence cost, so there is no separate per-core VMware subscription on top. For a large core banking cluster that is a real saving on every renewal, and it removes one vendor and one support path from your audit.
How does Nutanix help with our DR test and audit trail?
Nutanix has built-in async replication and metro availability, and one Prism Central console that records when the last failover actually ran. That gives your RBI inspection a single written trail instead of a story. Sirius Star sets the DR runbook with you and signs off each tested failover so the evidence exists before the auditor asks.
Is Nutanix a good fit if our core banking app only supports VMware?
Not yet. If your core banking vendor certifies only VMware, keep that workload on VMware until they update the support matrix. Move the workloads that are certification-free first, such as VDI, file services, and test and dev, then revisit the core app when the vendor catches up. We will tell you honestly which workloads are safe to move now.
What does Sirius Star actually do on a Nutanix BFSI project?
We size the cluster against your real load, quote it in 24 working hours with GST broken out, run a pilot, then migrate group by group with the DR test signed off at each step. One escalation path, response within 24 working hours, out of Vashi, Navi Mumbai. We sell and service Nutanix and its alternatives, so the sizing advice is honest either way.
