The monsoon front hit Salt Lake at 6.42 pm on a Tuesday in late June. First the lights blinked. Then they blinked again. On the third dip the UPS in the server cupboard buzzed for eleven seconds and went silent. Two servers, one switch, and the SAP terminal for the customs clearing team all dropped together. At month 42 the string was holding maybe 60 percent of rated capacity. On the third dip that night, the batteries could not carry the shutdown ramp for the servers. Everything crashed hard.
What a sized UPS on its own actually buys you
A sized UPS gives you three things and only three things. Clean voltage to sensitive kit. A window to shut down without corrupting data. A place for a generator to hand over to, if you have one. That is it.
It does not stop the power cut. It does not maintain itself. It does not tell you the batteries are ageing unless someone reads the panel or a monitoring tool pushes an alert.

An Annual Maintenance Contract for a UPS is a paid promise that a trained engineer will visit at set intervals, run preventive checks, and respond inside an agreed SLA when the box screams. It sounds boring. It is boring. It is also the difference between a 12-minute recovery and a three-hour one.
A comprehensive AMC in India, for a 5 to 20 kVA online UPS, usually covers scheduled inspections every quarter, battery health checks with load testing, firmware updates, and free replacement of internal components such as fans, boards and worn capacitors when they age out. What does UPS AMC cost in India, honestly
The public tender record is a useful sanity check because government banks publish real quotes. A comprehensive 20 kVA online UPS AMC at BDC Digiphoto landed at ₹21,500 per unit per year. Indian Bank’s Lucknow zonal office AMC tender for a fleet mixing 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 10 kVA units set a comparable per-unit range (Indian Bank UPS AMC tender). For a small office running one 5 to 10 kVA online UPS, budget between ₹4,000 and ₹18,000 per year for the AMC alone, and add a separate line for a battery swap every three years.
Compare that to the cost of one evening’s downtime for the Kolkata clearing agent. Their gross billing that Tuesday evening was ₹92,000 across four container files. All four got pushed to the next day. Two of the four missed a customs slot and had a demurrage catch-up bill of about ₹28,000 combined.
