Docking station for laptop: how to buy without overpaying for ports
A 140-desk engineering design consultancy in Noida asked for a quote to put Thunderbolt on every seat. We counted the ports people were actually using first.

A docking station for laptop fleets is bought on three numbers, and bandwidth is the one that matters least. Match the power delivery to your heaviest machine, then count the ports your people actually plug in. Bandwidth comes last. Only the render and CAD seats will need Thunderbolt.
Real India pricing at 100-plus units: Thunderbolt 4 docks land at ₹19,000 to ₹28,000, business USB-C docks at ₹8,500 to ₹14,000, marketplace multiport hubs at ₹1,800 to ₹3,500.* Putting Thunderbolt on every desk in a 140-seat office costs about ₹15 lakh more than splitting it by seat, and buys nothing for most of them.
₹33.6 lakh. That was the number on the first dock quote a 140-desk engineering design consultancy in Noida showed me, and nobody in the room thought it was strange.
The logic was clean. New floor, new laptops, hybrid seating, one cable per desk. Their IT lead, Vinay, had specced a Thunderbolt 4 dock at every position so that nothing would need revisiting for five years. Future-proof. A word that has cost Indian offices more money than any other word in procurement.
I am Riya. We sell hardware, so a ₹33.6 lakh dock order is a good week for us. That is exactly why I want to tell you what we found when we stopped reading spec sheets and walked the floor.
Here is my bias, up front. Eighteen months earlier I had put Thunderbolt docks across a 60-seat animation studio and it went beautifully. I walked into Noida ready to sign off on the same answer. Six weeks later I was arguing against my own quote.
Round one: the sticker count
Before anything got ordered, we ran a boring exercise. Two weeks, 140 desks, a printed sheet taped to each one. Every time somebody plugged something into their laptop, they ticked a box. No judgement, no IT ticket, just a tick.
The median desk used three ports. A monitor, a keyboard and mouse receiver, and a headset. That is it. The 90th percentile used four, usually adding a phone on charge.
Eleven desks went past five. Nine of those eleven sat in the design and visualisation team, pulling project files off external SSDs and driving two large panels.
Vinay’s shortlisted dock had thirteen ports. On 118 of those 140 desks, nine of them would never be touched. You would not buy a seven-seater for a family of three because the showroom had one in stock. Docks get bought that way every day.
Tape a sheet to twenty desks for two weeks and count what gets plugged in. It costs nothing and it decides your port count, your budget and your spares policy. Everything a vendor tells you after that is negotiable against a real number.
Round two: the wattage nobody quotes you on
This is where the real money was hiding, and it was not in the dock at all.
The design team ran 16-inch mobile workstations that ship with a 200W power adapter. Under a render load those machines draw properly. A dock rated at 100W keeps the battery alive and does not refill it, so the machine slides down through the afternoon while it looks plugged in.
The finance and operations floor ran 14-inch business laptops with 65W bricks. For them a 90W or 100W dock is generous headroom, not a compromise.
The USB standard has allowed up to 240W over one USB-C connection since the extended power range profiles arrived. Microsoft’s own USB Type-C guidance is worth twenty minutes before you sign anything. The catch is the cable. Extended power range needs a rated 5A cable, and a ₹300 cable pulled from a drawer will hold the whole desk at 60W and never mention it.
So the spec that decides your Tuesday is the wattage number, and after that the cable. Neither appears in the headline of a marketplace listing. The port count does, in bold.
Round three: the ₹2,600 hub, tested honestly
Six desks in the operations team volunteered for the cheap tier. A ₹2,600 multiport hub from a marketplace listing, the kind that shows seven icons on the box and a very confident product title.
Two things broke, and neither was the thing people expect.
First, no power delivery worth the name. The laptop charged at whatever trickle the hub could spare, so people started plugging the original charger in as well. Two cables per desk. The entire point of a dock, gone.
Second, the 4K monitor came up at 30Hz. Not broken, just wrong in a way nobody could name. Three of the six users reported eye strain and one asked for a new monitor. The monitor was fine.
I will be straight about where the cheap tier does work. One person, one 1080p screen, occasional desk use, no charging expectation. Buy the hub and keep your money. For a floor, it is a ticket factory with a low sticker price.
What Thunderbolt actually buys you, and who needs it
Thunderbolt 4 moves 40 Gbps. Thunderbolt 5 doubles that to 80 Gbps in both directions, and a boost mode pushes 120 Gbps toward the display when a monitor asks for it. Intel set the numbers out when it introduced the standard.
Those numbers earn their money on some desks. Somebody scrubbing 6K footage off an external array, or running two high-refresh panels, or hanging an external GPU off the desk. On Apple machines the Thunderbolt path also behaves most predictably with multiple displays.
They earn nothing in accounts. A spreadsheet, a browser with forty tabs, a Teams call and two 1080p monitors will not find the ceiling of a plain USB-C dock, ever. Paying ₹13,000 extra per desk buys headroom those seats will never reach. You are prepaying for a Tuesday that does not arrive.
One thing to check on the laptop side before you buy either. Not every USB-C port on a business laptop carries video, and OEM dock behaviour varies by model family, which Dell documents in its dock compatibility guide. Check the machines you own, not the machines in the brochure.
The math, at 140 desks
Here is the comparison that came out of six weeks, priced at their real volume.

Read the row about ports next to the row about price. Three ports on every tier. The gap between the columns is bandwidth and wattage, and only one of those changes anybody’s day.
What I told Vinay
Split it. Twenty-two Thunderbolt docks for the design and visualisation seats, at 140W where the workstation asked for it. One hundred and eighteen business USB-C docks at 100W for everybody else. Same brand across both, so the spares cupboard holds two SKUs and not five.
₹18.2 lakh against ₹33.6 lakh. Fifteen lakh back, and the twenty-two people who genuinely needed the bandwidth got a better dock than the one-size quote would have given them.
Then the argument I lost, which is worth telling. Vinay wanted a single dock model everywhere for helpdesk simplicity, and he was not wrong. A mixed estate means a mixed script. We settled it by making the two dock models different colours and labelling every desk. Thoda boring, and it has held for four months.
Somebody in the room raised the marketplace price, as somebody always does. For a single dock on a card, Amazon is hard to beat and I will not pretend otherwise. For a floor of 140, you are also buying the right business SKU and a warranty that covers commercial use. Plus one number to call when eleven of them fail in the same month. If you are buying one dock, buy it online. If you are outfitting a team, that is a different purchase.
We have shipped enough of these across Indian offices to know where it goes wrong afterwards. Almost always it is the cable somebody swaps in March, and a desk that drops to 60W without telling anybody.
If you are buying docks for a floor yourself
Five steps, in this order.
Count the ports before you shortlist. Two weeks, a taped sheet, a tick per plug. Bas. Your median number is your dock, and your top ten desks are a separate order.
Find your heaviest laptop and read its power adapter. Buy dock wattage at or above that number for those seats. Everything below can sit on 90W or 100W without anybody noticing.
Buy the cables with the docks, from the same order, rated for the wattage. Then label them. This is the single cheapest thing on this list and the one that saves the most tickets.
Decide bandwidth last, and only for the seats that move large files or drive high-refresh panels. If your fleet is mixed across brands, that is a different question and we worked through it in the universal dock piece for mixed fleets.
Settle the monitors in the same order. Dock resolution and monitor resolution have to agree or one of them is wasted money, and our shortlist of office monitors by use case pairs with this. If the laptops are being refreshed at the same time, price the whole desk together using the 2026 business laptop shortlist. Buying past 50 devices this year, ask us to price device lifecycle management alongside, because the dock, the laptop and the refresh date belong on one register.
Where our pitch loses: if you are already buying laptops from one OEM in volume, the dock bundled into that deal often lands cheaper than anything we can quote separately. Ask your OEM for the bundled number first. We would rather you ask than find out later.
What to take away
- Wattage causes the tickets. Bandwidth rarely does. Match dock power delivery to your heaviest laptop’s adapter. A 100W dock under a 200W workstation drains the battery while it looks plugged in.
- Count the ports before you shortlist. The median desk across 140 seats used three. The thirteen-port dock left nine untouched on 118 of them.
- Thunderbolt earns its price on a minority of seats. Large file work and high-refresh panels, yes. Spreadsheets and Teams calls, no.
- Split the order by seat and save real money. 22 Thunderbolt plus 118 USB-C came to ₹18.2 lakh against ₹33.6 lakh for one tier everywhere.
- Buy the cables with the docks. An unrated cable holds the desk at 60W and no spec sheet warns you.

Do I need a Thunderbolt dock or is USB-C enough?
USB-C is enough for most office desks. If the person runs spreadsheets, a browser, calls and up to two 1080p or 4K monitors at 60Hz, a business USB-C dock will not be the limit. Buy Thunderbolt for seats that copy large files off external drives, drive high-refresh or multiple large panels, or attach an external GPU. In our 140-desk count that was 22 people out of 140.
How many watts should a docking station for a laptop deliver?
Read the wattage printed on the laptop’s own power adapter and buy at or above it. A 14-inch business laptop with a 65W brick is happy on a 90W or 100W dock. A 16-inch mobile workstation with a 200W adapter will not charge properly under load on a 100W dock. Give that seat 140W, or accept that its original charger stays on the desk. Buy a cable rated for the same wattage, because an unrated cable caps the whole thing.
Are cheap USB-C hubs any good for an office?
For one person on one 1080p screen with the laptop charger still plugged in, yes, and we say so even though it costs us the sale. For a floor, no. On the six desks we trialled at ₹2,600 the laptop would not charge properly and the 4K monitor came up at 30Hz. Users feel that as eye strain without knowing why. The cheap tier saves money on the invoice and spends it on tickets.
How many ports does a docking station for a laptop actually need?
Fewer than you are about to buy. Across 140 desks over two weeks the median seat used three connections: a monitor, a keyboard and mouse receiver, and a headset. The 90th percentile used four. Count your own desks for a fortnight before shortlisting, then buy the port count that number justifies plus one spare.

The sheets came off the desks on a Friday.
